The following grades of membership are allocated using:

Qualifications
Responsible position
Experience

As criteria:

Honorary member - by IOSM Council nomination only
Fellow member - by IOSM Council nomination only
Full Member - by membership application and grading
Associate member - by membership application and grading
Affiliate member - by membership application and not subjected to grading, but has no voting rights

Membership is available to all persons who subscribe to the aims and objectives of the Institute and may include applicants from numerous fields of occupation, such as Industrial, Mining, Electricity, Security, Fire Protection, Occupational Health and Hygiene, Consultants, Construction & Transportation etc.
